How many of us can honestly say that we can spend 24hours without our cell phones, iPad or laptops? What is the first thing you reach out for when you wake up in the morning? What’s the last thing you drop before falling asleep at night? What do you check on when you wake up in the middle of the night? How many of us go on a date or to a party but we’re so focused on our phones we miss it all, there’s a quote I heard a while ago; ‘if you didn’t Instagram it, did it really happen?

Technology has amazing advantages and provides unimaginable opportunity whilst easing lives but the addiction to some modern technology is undeniably harmful. We live in an era where most people determine their own value and the standard of their lives by how many likes and comments they get online, where one needs constant acceptance and gratification from strangers online they’ve never met.

As much as it’s beneficial and convenient to plug in, it’s very important to remember to plug out from time to time. The ping ping ping never stops until we stop it. It’s important to sit and truly reflect on what’s important, on the human relationships being neglected for e-followers; sometimes even a relationship with self.

We live in such an ‘instant’ generation, uber takes a few minutes, Jumia food online delivers lunch to your door, you can even meet a love interest with a swipe on tinder, there’s an easier version of most meals that would normally take hours to prep; we are a generation of having everything done easily and quickly, while there are major advantages to this, I fear that it does not build resilience or character, it leads to an inflated sense of entitlement and an unhealthy dependence on technology

However you use the power of the mobile technology is up to you, but here are some ways to better control the power of tech on our lives
1. Have fixed times when you don’t touch your electronic gadgets; the moment right after you wake up is easily the most important part of your day as it sets the tone for the entire day, definitely avoid your phone at this time, spend more time writing down (the traditional way with a pen and paper) your goals for the day
2, Decide to be more present with the people you spend time with, less time taking selfies and tweeting about how awesome being with the person is and more time actually enjoying the person’s presence
3. Make technology work for you, don’t be a slave to it. You will always be the boss of tech, it shouldn’t be the other around. Don’t create such a dependency on it that you wouldn’t be able to cope if anything changed instantly.

4. In a world where everything needs an update frequently, always remember to update your own self; ambition, personality and all. Humans need re-evaluation and an upgrade from time to time, assess yourself and make necessary changes as life goes on.

5. Don’t be so influenced by social media that it starts to change your real life character to match the persona you have created for the e-public, all the while craving social acceptance and soaking the e-popularity. Who are you when you log off? Remember your real life matters more than your internet life.

I also understand that there are probably over a hundred benefits of being technologically aware and active so I’m saying focus on the positives, build on those and never become a slave to tech
